With a thinking-love she creates a culture in the home all her own. A mother does a lot of taking care, so she needs to take care of herself, too. <\/a>\nWhy is this particularly important for the home teacher?<\/h3>\n
A home teacher has a heart of devotion but can easily feel overwhelmed. Much of what she sets out to accomplish is new to her – and specialized. In providing a Christian education for her child she may feel as I remember feeling: apprehensive. Confidence is a slow-growing plant. Is there a secret for not feeling overwhelmed?<\/h3>\n
It helps to like<\/em> doing what God calls us to do. When a mother applies Charlotte Mason\u2019s principles (however imperfectly) to home life, the hours of the day run more smoothly and happily. She, then, is not too exhausted to enjoy her husband\u2019s company.<\/p>\nWhat\u2019s one principle?<\/h3>\n
Keeping well-nourished.<\/p>\n
As a mother is feeding and cultivating the souls of her children, she is also nourishing her own soul with ideas from good books. So nourished and refreshed with ideas, she keeps growing closer to God and into the Christian woman God is designing her to be.<\/p>\n
When Charlotte Mason\u2019s wise recommendations are followed, beautiful music fills the air. The family becomes intimately familiar with paintings and masters of art. Nature is observed with a sense of wonder. Good books are savored. The Bible is understood by reading and narrating it, too.<\/p>\n![\"notebook\"](\"https:\/\/charlottemason.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/notebook.jpg\")
<\/a>\nChildren are watching their mother. They notice how much or how little she enjoys all the true, just, pure, lovely, praise-worthy, and excellent things to think about. When these things are mutually appreciated the homeschool is \u201cTwice Blessed.\u201d Such an education blesses those who give and those who take. I am grateful that by learning alongside my children I was blessed with what I had missed in my childhood.<\/p>\n
How does Mother Culture\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0meet a need?<\/h3>\nMoms seek to create a happy home. I sometimes see comments on-line that are a cry for help. \u201cMy children won\u2019t do as I say!\u201d This always grabs my sympathy. Moms want obedient children and it starts with a mother understanding her rock-solid position of authority.<\/p>\n
This God-given authority is what you like to call the Majesty of Motherhood, isn\u2019t it?<\/h3>\n
Yes. It\u2019s a strong concept. In the home, father is king. Mother is queen. Parents serve their children with a steadfast love, dignity, and a degree of self-sacrifice. In turn, their children are to honor, respect and obey them.<\/p>\n
A principle connected to this is that of establishing good habits day by day, hour by hour. It is the kind but firm way of bringing up children. Teach a child to obey and you can teach him anything after that.<\/p>\n![\"toy](\"https:\/\/charlottemason.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/toy-truck.jpg\")
\n
What did Mother Culture\u00ae<\/sup> look like in your life, Karen?<\/h3>\nI arranged the activities of our day. Together we would worship, do chores, study, observe, appreciate, and play. But I also made sure to fit in a little play and creativity of my own. These were usually things that take 15 minutes, things within easy-reach.<\/p>\n![\"mittens\"](\"https:\/\/charlottemason.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/mittens.jpg\")
<\/a>\nLike what, for instance?<\/h3>\n
After my third child was born, I had a sudden urge to learn how to knit mittens. I de-stressed with a little knitting on a Sunday afternoon. All through my children\u2019s growing years, I kept them well-supplied with wool mittens of all colors. Watching them dig in the snow wearing Mommy\u2019s Mittens was one of my joys.<\/p>\n
Of course, knitting isn\u2019t every woman\u2019s choice. For some, the most refreshing part of their day is to take a solitary walk. Others like to garden, photograph flowers, keep a journal, write paper letters, sew curtains, paint furniture, or play a musical instrument.<\/p>\n![\"farm\"](\"https:\/\/charlottemason.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/farm.jpg\")
<\/a>\nWhat\u2019s one of the goals of your new book, Mother Culture\u00ae<\/sup> \u2013 For a Happy Homeschool<\/em>?<\/h3>\nI set out to make my book as ministering as I could. The little girl I once home-taught is a mother and home-teacher today. This daughter and I talk on the telephone long-distance. When she is frazzled or over-tired, I encourage her. This encouragement has made its way into the book. I address those things that concern home teachers most.<\/p>\n![\"even](\"https:\/\/charlottemason.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/even-steven.jpg\")
<\/a>\nKaren, you seem to be taking on the position of older-woman-in-the-Lord.<\/h3>\n
Home teachers can feel like the odd-ones-out. I\u2019m a grandmother now, but I can remember days of loneliness as a young stay-at-home mom. Neighborhoods are deserted during the day. And sadly, it\u2019s rare to hear the choice of homeschooling or Christian school affirmed in the pulpit. Moreover, some of us are the first Christians in our extended family. My book is an offer of Christian friendship, really. It\u2019s an offer to be the older-woman-in-the-Lord that I wished I had known when I was young.<\/p>\n

<\/a>\nThe company Simply Charlotte Mason<\/a> has published the series anew. We authorized use of the copyright material on the covers and the front-matter of our pink volumes. They asked Dean to write an introduction for this new edition. Here’s a piece of it:<\/p>\n“The 21st century has brought changes in the way people access, read, and store books. Both are what I’ve become so fond, and so familiar, reading. I like how my eye can land on the page on the exact geographical spot of the pages of my pink volumes.<\/p>\n
This is good news for those of us who are involved with personal and group study.<\/p>\n
It preserves footnoting and referencing so that we can all be literally on the “same page.”<\/p>\n
More good news. The print is larger (for my old eyes) and the ink is darker and easier to see.
\nHow is it that I’m noticing gems I hadn’t noticed before? Was this bit always here?<\/em> I asked myself.<\/p>\nRe-reading is re-discovering. And Miss Mason’s ideas are Christian-life-wisdom for people of all ages; even grandmothers.<\/p>\n![\"The](\"https:\/\/charlottemason.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/text-2.jpg\")

Sometimes she gets muddled. I suspect a probable cause. She sees an endless scroll of questions on Facebook sites. Here young mothers seek specific advice on learning materials. Then, a myriad of well-meaning, but conflicting answers flood in.<\/p>\n
“I think you might be experiencing information-overload,” I tell her. “Reading a product review and also a couple pages of a well-written book is a calmer, more consecutive, and less confusing practice,” I remind her.<\/p>\n![\"painting](\"https:\/\/charlottemason.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/painting-on-the-mantle-2.jpg\")

Now Sophia is the home-teaching mom. She is learning what to “think” as well as what to “do.”<\/p>\n
It’s always a joy (and relief) to hear what she has decided to apply, and that it is working satisfactory, if not splendidly well, as yet.<\/p>\n
It takes time to see progress with anything newly adapted. I commend her hourly effort.<\/p>\n![\"The](\"https:\/\/charlottemason.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/cm-books-in-kitchen-2.jpg\")
<\/a>\nThe pages of Miss Mason’s books are a big help with child training, home atmosphere, and discipline.
\nThey provide a guide to the kind of books that open the door of a child’s mind and create that wonderful “intellectual glow” on the faces of the children that make all the time and effort worthwhile.<\/p>\n
I enjoy laying one of my new Charlotte Mason books open where my lap-top computer used to rest before it died. (I’m in no rush to replace it.) I like to read 2 or 3 pages in an afternoon quiet-time. That’s all.<\/p>\n
I might pencil a note in the margin. Also, whatever especially speaks to me I copy into a hardcover-notebook.<\/p>\n![\"bunny](\"https:\/\/charlottemason.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/bunny-on-the-flower-garden-path-2.jpg\")
<\/a>\nSee the bunny? It sleeps under the lilies and ate every lily leaf and parsley leaf there. Humph.
\nA slow reading is the only doable one for me. Even during my years of young motherhood, when I sometimes had to contend with a quickening sense of urgency in wanting to understand Miss Mason, I sipped the pages like tea.<\/p>\n
I didn’t worry about having to understand absolutely everything I read. Ideas have a way of growing on you. Weeks or months would go by when I let “thoughts think themselves.”*1 I would go about the business of life. Ideas have the potency to stand up to simmering on the back burner.*2 The “life” part (the application of practical ideas) is where the most patience and persistence is required. Keep plodding, my friends.<\/p>\n

An interview with Karen Andreola<\/h2>\nKaren, what is Mother Culture\u00ae<\/sup>?<\/h3>\nMother Culture\u00ae<\/sup> is a way-of-life, the skillful art of how a mother looks after the ways of her household. With a thinking-love she creates a culture in the home all her own. A mother does a lot of taking care, so she needs to take care of herself, too. Much depends on how she manages her life.<\/p>\n<\/a>\nWhy is this particularly important for the home teacher?<\/h3>\n
A home teacher has a heart of devotion but can easily feel overwhelmed. Much of what she sets out to accomplish is new to her – and specialized. In providing a Christian education for her child she may feel as I remember feeling: apprehensive. Confidence is a slow-growing plant. But confidence does grow with practice.<\/p>\n\n
Is there a secret for not feeling overwhelmed?<\/h3>\n
It helps to like<\/em> doing what God calls us to do. When a mother applies Charlotte Mason\u2019s principles (however imperfectly) to home life, the hours of the day run more smoothly and happily. She, then, is not too exhausted to enjoy her husband\u2019s company.<\/p>\nWhat\u2019s one principle?<\/h3>\n
Keeping well-nourished.<\/p>\n
As a mother is feeding and cultivating the souls of her children, she is also nourishing her own soul with ideas from good books. So nourished and refreshed with ideas, she keeps growing closer to God and into the Christian woman God is designing her to be.<\/p>\n
When Charlotte Mason\u2019s wise recommendations are followed, beautiful music fills the air. The family becomes intimately familiar with paintings and masters of art. Nature is observed with a sense of wonder. Good books are savored. The Bible is understood by reading and narrating it, too.<\/p>\n<\/a>\nChildren are watching their mother. They notice how much or how little she enjoys all the true, just, pure, lovely, praise-worthy, and excellent things to think about. When these things are mutually appreciated the homeschool is \u201cTwice Blessed.\u201d Such an education blesses those who give and those who take. I am grateful that by learning alongside my children I was blessed with what I had missed in my childhood.<\/p>\n
How does Mother Culture\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0meet a need?<\/h3>\nMoms seek to create a happy home. I sometimes see comments on-line that are a cry for help. \u201cMy children won\u2019t do as I say!\u201d This always grabs my sympathy. Moms want obedient children and it starts with a mother understanding her rock-solid position of authority.<\/p>\n
This God-given authority is what you like to call the Majesty of Motherhood, isn\u2019t it?<\/h3>\n
Yes. It\u2019s a strong concept. In the home, father is king. Mother is queen. Parents serve their children with a steadfast love, dignity, and a degree of self-sacrifice. In turn, their children are to honor, respect and obey them.<\/p>\n
A principle connected to this is that of establishing good habits day by day, hour by hour. It is the kind but firm way of bringing up children. Teach a child to obey and you can teach him anything after that.<\/p>\n\n
What did Mother Culture\u00ae<\/sup> look like in your life, Karen?<\/h3>\nI arranged the activities of our day. Together we would worship, do chores, study, observe, appreciate, and play. But I also made sure to fit in a little play and creativity of my own. These were usually things that take 15 minutes, things within easy-reach.<\/p>\n<\/a>\nLike what, for instance?<\/h3>\n
After my third child was born, I had a sudden urge to learn how to knit mittens. I de-stressed with a little knitting on a Sunday afternoon. All through my children\u2019s growing years, I kept them well-supplied with wool mittens of all colors. Watching them dig in the snow wearing Mommy\u2019s Mittens was one of my joys.<\/p>\n
Of course, knitting isn\u2019t every woman\u2019s choice. For some, the most refreshing part of their day is to take a solitary walk. Others like to garden, photograph flowers, keep a journal, write paper letters, sew curtains, paint furniture, or play a musical instrument.<\/p>\n<\/a>\nWhat\u2019s one of the goals of your new book, Mother Culture\u00ae<\/sup> \u2013 For a Happy Homeschool<\/em>?<\/h3>\nI set out to make my book as ministering as I could. The little girl I once home-taught is a mother and home-teacher today. This daughter and I talk on the telephone long-distance. When she is frazzled or over-tired, I encourage her. This encouragement has made its way into the book. I address those things that concern home teachers most.<\/p>\n<\/a>\nKaren, you seem to be taking on the position of older-woman-in-the-Lord.<\/h3>\n
Home teachers can feel like the odd-ones-out. I\u2019m a grandmother now, but I can remember days of loneliness as a young stay-at-home mom. Neighborhoods are deserted during the day. And sadly, it\u2019s rare to hear the choice of homeschooling or Christian school affirmed in the pulpit. Moreover, some of us are the first Christians in our extended family. My book is an offer of Christian friendship, really. It\u2019s an offer to be the older-woman-in-the-Lord that I wished I had known when I was young.<\/p>\n
<\/h3>\nWhat are your hopes for the book?<\/h3>\n
My prayer is this: that a mother will find the ideas and suggestions invigorating \u2013 especially if she, too often, has a low battery. May it energize her sense of purpose.<\/p>\n
<\/a><\/h3>\nIs this a book for young mothers?<\/h3>\n
It\u2019s for mothers of all ages because I also give the experienced mother helpful ideas for building up the body of Christ within her circle of friends.<\/p>\n

I’m excited. Charlotte Mason’s writings are back in print. Now in a large format. My new set has arrived and I’ve been writing in the margins! I love my new books. As always I am sipping the pages slowly, like tea.<\/p>\n<\/a>\nThe company Simply Charlotte Mason<\/a> has published the series anew. We authorized use of the copyright material on the covers and the front-matter of our pink volumes. They asked Dean to write an introduction for this new edition. Here’s a piece of it:<\/p>\n“The 21st century has brought changes in the way people access, read, and store books. The demand for printed books has diminished while the demand for e-books has increased. Sadly, we are no longer able to continue our printing of The Original Homeschooling Series. Yet thanks to kindred spirits at Simply Charlotte Mason, we have been able to pass the baton, so to speak, and partner with them to see The Original Homeschooling Series safely back in print.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/a>\nI’m happy to announce that the beautiful old-fashioned font is intact. Both are what I’ve become so fond, and so familiar, reading. I like how my eye can land on the page on the exact geographical spot of the pages of my pink volumes.<\/p>\n
This is good news for those of us who are involved with personal and group study.<\/p>\n
It preserves footnoting and referencing so that we can all be literally on the “same page.”<\/p>\n
More good news. The print is larger (for my old eyes) and the ink is darker and easier to see.
\nHow is it that I’m noticing gems I hadn’t noticed before? Was this bit always here?<\/em> I asked myself.<\/p>\nRe-reading is re-discovering. And Miss Mason’s ideas are Christian-life-wisdom for people of all ages; even grandmothers.<\/p>\n<\/a>Beautiful old-fashioned font is intact. Pagination is the same. A larger, darker size print. She is home-teaching. What exhausting effort Sophia puts into her bright, rambunctious children.<\/p>\n
Sometimes she gets muddled. I suspect a probable cause. She sees an endless scroll of questions on Facebook sites. Here young mothers seek specific advice on learning materials. Then, a myriad of well-meaning, but conflicting answers flood in.<\/p>\n
“I think you might be experiencing information-overload,” I tell her. “Reading a product review and also a couple pages of a well-written book is a calmer, more consecutive, and less confusing practice,” I remind her.<\/p>\n<\/a>Old oil painting. Gift from Dean. A bouquet that never withers.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nIn the days of her girlhood, I endeavored to live Charlotte Mason’s advise. I rarely talked about the philosophy with my children.<\/p>\n
Now Sophia is the home-teaching mom. She is learning what to “think” as well as what to “do.”<\/p>\n
It’s always a joy (and relief) to hear what she has decided to apply, and that it is working satisfactory, if not splendidly well, as yet.<\/p>\n
It takes time to see progress with anything newly adapted. I commend her hourly effort.<\/p>\n<\/a>\nThe pages of Miss Mason’s books are a big help with child training, home atmosphere, and discipline.
\nThey provide a guide to the kind of books that open the door of a child’s mind and create that wonderful “intellectual glow” on the faces of the children that make all the time and effort worthwhile.<\/p>\n
I enjoy laying one of my new Charlotte Mason books open where my lap-top computer used to rest before it died. (I’m in no rush to replace it.) I like to read 2 or 3 pages in an afternoon quiet-time. That’s all.<\/p>\n
I might pencil a note in the margin. Also, whatever especially speaks to me I copy into a hardcover-notebook.<\/p>\n<\/a>\nSee the bunny? It sleeps under the lilies and ate every lily leaf and parsley leaf there. Humph.

I sometimes see comments on-line that are a cry for help. \u201cMy children won\u2019t do as I say!\u201d This always grabs my sympathy. Moms want obedient children and it starts with a mother understanding her rock-solid position of authority.<\/p>\n Yes. It\u2019s a strong concept. In the home, father is king. Mother is queen. Parents serve their children with a steadfast love, dignity, and a degree of self-sacrifice. In turn, their children are to honor, respect and obey them.<\/p>\n A principle connected to this is that of establishing good habits day by day, hour by hour. It is the kind but firm way of bringing up children. Teach a child to obey and you can teach him anything after that.<\/p>\n I arranged the activities of our day. Together we would worship, do chores, study, observe, appreciate, and play. But I also made sure to fit in a little play and creativity of my own. These were usually things that take 15 minutes, things within easy-reach.<\/p>\n After my third child was born, I had a sudden urge to learn how to knit mittens. I de-stressed with a little knitting on a Sunday afternoon. All through my children\u2019s growing years, I kept them well-supplied with wool mittens of all colors. Watching them dig in the snow wearing Mommy\u2019s Mittens was one of my joys.<\/p>\n Of course, knitting isn\u2019t every woman\u2019s choice. For some, the most refreshing part of their day is to take a solitary walk. Others like to garden, photograph flowers, keep a journal, write paper letters, sew curtains, paint furniture, or play a musical instrument.<\/p>\n I set out to make my book as ministering as I could. The little girl I once home-taught is a mother and home-teacher today. This daughter and I talk on the telephone long-distance. When she is frazzled or over-tired, I encourage her. This encouragement has made its way into the book. I address those things that concern home teachers most.<\/p>\n Home teachers can feel like the odd-ones-out. I\u2019m a grandmother now, but I can remember days of loneliness as a young stay-at-home mom. Neighborhoods are deserted during the day. And sadly, it\u2019s rare to hear the choice of homeschooling or Christian school affirmed in the pulpit. Moreover, some of us are the first Christians in our extended family. My book is an offer of Christian friendship, really. It\u2019s an offer to be the older-woman-in-the-Lord that I wished I had known when I was young.<\/p>\n My prayer is this: that a mother will find the ideas and suggestions invigorating \u2013 especially if she, too often, has a low battery. She sees an endless scroll of questions on Facebook sites. Here young mothers seek specific advice on learning materials. Then, a myriad of well-meaning, but conflicting answers flood in.<\/p>\n “I think you might be experiencing information-overload,” I tell her. “Reading a product review and also a couple pages of a well-written book is a calmer, more consecutive, and less confusing practice,” I remind her.<\/p>\n In the days of her girlhood, I endeavored to live Charlotte Mason’s advise. I rarely talked about the philosophy with my children.<\/p>\n Now Sophia is the home-teaching mom.
